After my son' s death, Life Goes On, But We Were Different

Life goes on.

There was no choice.

Julie and I continued working. Alison returned to her classes. From the outside, our daily lives gradually returned to some kind of normal routine.

But inside, we were different.

Our hearts all carried the loss of our dear Philip.

The house was the same. Our daily routines continued. We went to work and Alison went back to school.

But something was missing.

A member of our family was gone.

I continued working at PC Channel. But the computer business was becoming increasingly difficult. Business was so poor that the company eventually had to reduce its staff.

I was retrenched as a result.

Losing my job was another setback, but at that time it was not the only thing occupying my mind.

The loss of Philip had affected me deeply.

I found it difficult to concentrate. My mind would wander, and I could hardly focus on my work or think clearly about what I should do next.

Looking back, I can understand why.

I was trying to deal with two things at the same time—the grief of losing my son and the uncertainty of losing my job.

Life was telling me that I had to move forward.

But moving forward was not the same as forgetting.

We would carry Philip with us in our hearts while trying to rebuild our lives in Canada.
