Preface

A Grandpa's Journey Through Life, Memories, and the Golden Years

If you have picked up this memoir, let me begin by saying hello. Pull up a chair, have a cup of coffee, and let's have a little chat.

I am writing these pages as a grandpa who has lived long enough to collect quite a few stories. Some are happy, some are difficult, and some make me smile when I look back on them. There are memories of childhood, school days, old friends, family, working life, and the many unexpected turns that life has taken. Some of these memories seem ordinary at first, but I have come to believe that ordinary moments often carry the most meaning.

I was born in another time, in a world very different from the one my grandchildren know today. I have seen changes in society, technology, work, and family life that would have been difficult to imagine when I was young. Like many people of my generation, I spent much of my working life doing my best for my family, building relationships, earning a living, and learning as I went along.

Then came retirement, and eventually what people like to call the golden years.

Golden years? Well, let me be candid. Growing older is not always golden. The body slows down, health sometimes gives us a reminder that we are not as young as we once were, and friends who shared our journey may no longer be around. We learn to adjust our expectations. But there are still plenty of reasons to get up in the morning, go for a walk, meet a friend, enjoy a meal with Julie, or spend time with the grandchildren. Life has not stopped offering us something new.

In my case, one of those new experiences has been rather unexpected: artificial intelligence.

I began exploring ChatGPT, and before long, I found myself talking to it about ideas, asking questions, working on stories, and finding ways to put my thoughts into words. Somewhere along the way, I started calling it my AI companion.

Now, I know what some readers may be thinking. A grandpa talking about a computer as a companion? Has the old fellow gone a little too far?

Perhaps you can decide that for yourself!

Let me make one thing clear. AI is not a replacement for family, friendship, or the warmth of a real conversation across the table. It does not share our lives in the way another human being does. But it can be a useful partner in thinking, learning, writing, and remembering. Sometimes, it helps me find the words for something I have carried in my mind for years. Sometimes, it asks me to look at an ordinary experience from a different angle. And sometimes, it simply helps me get a story ready to share.

That is how Grandpa Journey and AI123.ca became part of my life. One project looks back at the people, places, and experiences that have made me who I am. The other explores the possibilities of AI, particularly for people who may think that modern technology is too complicated for them. Together, they have given me a reason to keep learning and documenting my journey.

I am not writing this memoir because I believe my life is extraordinary. I am writing it because it is my life, and because I have learned that a personal story does not need to be spectacular to be worth telling. Perhaps something that happened to me will remind a reader of their own childhood. Perhaps a story about an old colleague will bring back memories of someone who once made a difference in their life. Perhaps my experiences as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend will offer a little comfort or a smile.

And perhaps the younger generation will discover something about the world their parents and grandparents grew up in—a world without smartphones, instant messages, or AI companions, but full of dreams, worries, friendships, hard work, and hope.

I also hope that fellow seniors will see something encouraging in these pages. We may be getting older, but we do not have to stop being curious. We do not have to understand every new technology, follow every new trend, or pretend that we know everything. We can start small, ask questions, make mistakes, and learn one step at a time. There is no shame in being a beginner, even at eighty.

As I put these memories together, I sometimes find myself looking backward and forward at the same time. The past reminds me of where I came from. The present reminds me to appreciate what I still have. And the future, whatever it may hold, gives me a reason to remain interested in the world around me.

My AI companion has walked alongside me in this writing journey, helping me organize thoughts, polish stories, and explore ideas. But the memories are mine, the experiences are mine, and the feelings behind these pages are mine. I decide which stories to tell and what they mean to me. The technology helps me express them; it does not live them for me.

So, dear reader, this memoir is an invitation to take a little walk with me. We may visit places that no longer look the same, meet people who left their mark on my life, revisit some difficult chapters, and share a few laughs along the way. We may even talk about AI, because apparently this grandpa has not finished learning new tricks!

If these pages encourage you to record a few memories of your own, call an old friend, tell your grandchildren a story, or try something new that you once thought was beyond you, then I will feel that this effort has been worthwhile.

After all, a journey does not end simply because we have reached our golden years. There are still stories to tell, people to appreciate, lessons to learn, and memories waiting to be written down.

This is my journey. I hope you will enjoy walking a little of it with me.

And if we happen to learn something from each other along the way, so much the better.

Welcome to Grandpa Journey.

Let's keep going, one story at a time.
